Ben Chalfin focuses his developing practice on patent prosecution in the electrical, computer, life sciences, and electro-mechanical fields.  Ben was drawn to patent law because of the opportunity to work with new developments and emerging technologies.  He notes, “I’m fascinated by the idea of being intimately involved in protecting an advancement before all but a few people even know it exists.”

Unlike most patent attorneys, Ben was already a lawyer when he went to graduate school (in Electrical and Computer Engineering).  “I found that it gave me a bit of a different perspective,” he notes.  Looking at technology from a lawyer’s perspective made Ben less concerned with implementation strategies and more focused on theory.  Since Ben was already interested in preparing detailed descriptions describing inventions (instead of conceiving them), Ben approached his studies with a more scholastic viewpoint.  In fact, Ben’s academic curiosity is long-standing, with a wide variety of interests from chemistry to electrical engineering, as well as history and law.  As a result, Ben has an intellectual depth that extends beyond rapidly changing areas of innovation, such as telecommunications and medical devices, and allows him to get up to speed in many disparate technologies.

Ben was a summer associate at CRK during the summer of 2017.  “I had never worked in an office where I liked every single person before,” he said.  “Everyone, from the senior partners to the staff, was constantly upbeat and ready to help me whenever I needed it.”
