Vincent J. Roccia knows well that understanding his client’s business is the key to maximizing the value of their patent portfolio. That is why his advice is always informed by an intimate grasp of his client’s underlying business strategy. “In the past patent portfolios were developed in the dark, detached from a company’s core business decisions,” Vince says. “However, today as patent portfolios have moved up on the list of what’s important to a company, it’s vital that the patent decisions be fully informed by the business objectives.”

In providing advice to his clients, Vince draws on 12 years as an electrical engineer for the U.S. Department of Defense, where he designed communications and radar systems, and eventually served as the lead project manager. His work experience in the field allows Vince to be even more attuned to his client’s needs. “Clients have concerns that go beyond simple legal analysis,” Vince says. “Their day-to-day problems involve a mix of legal, business and technical issues. I can often get a quicker understanding of the interplay among these things because of my previous life experiences.”

Vince focuses his practice on wireless telecommunications and medical devices, and he counsels a wide range of companies, from small to mid-sized firms. Vince’s hands-on approach to his work has him visiting clients on a weekly basis. “Our clients often ask for ‘bet-the-company’ advice – advice that usually decides which direction the company will take. The best way to give this kind of advice is to spend time understanding the client’s business.”
